#Tips4NewMidwives DONT skip breaks, lunch just because you feel like you want to get everything done. That it was HANDOVER is for, things for you to handover that you’ve been unable to do. Don’t feel guilty about handing things over. Ever.
#Tips4NewMidwives Make friends with other preceptorship Midwife’s you’ll find all your worries are generally what everyone feels, so don’t feel isolated, speak up.
#Tips4NewMidwives If you feel that something is out of your remit / scope. Say so. Don’t ever do something you don’t feel confident / comfortable to do.
#Tips4NewMidwives You’ll go home & lie in bed wracking your brain about whether you handed something over or not. Kick that habit. We are human which therefore means we’ll forget things, make ‘mistakes’ there is no perfection in midwifery.
#Tips4NewMidwives Try to read up on new developments in midwifery so you keep up to date on contemporary evidence based practice. This will enable you to feel more confident information sharing with women & their families. Knowledge =Confidence.
#Tips4NewMidwives Don’t be afraid to negotiate your rota with management. Human factors show, lack of sleep, effects our capacity to effectively & safely Work. So if you’ve got weeks of non stop nights on end. Speak up & don’t be afraid of being seen as difficult ☺️
#Tips4NewMidwives Suturing tends to be the biggest thing preceptor Midwife’s are worried about. My advice is get stuck right in. Don’t be afraid, have a well experienced midwife supervise you, or a friendly registrar, the more you do it, the more your confidence will grow.
#Tips4NewMidwives Establish a non negotiable work- Life balance in the start of your career, there is no sovereignty in burn out. Maintain your passion & enthusiasm but not at the expense of your health, personal life. You matter.
#Tips4NewMidwives You’re a very valued member of the team, so don’t let being a newbie make you feel like your ideas don’t matter, new Midwife’s are the future senior leaders & therefore the real innovators of change, don’t be afraid to put your ideas forward.
