/ Trump has a serious cloud hanging over his head. Congressional dems are missing a rare opportunity to run a principled but brutally necessary campaign against Trump and his Congressional enablers that goes to the heart of our nation’s national security:
/whether a nominee for the Supreme Court put forward by a president under investigation by a special counsel for, among other things, conspiring against the United States, should be granted a Congressional hearing?
/Using the so-called ‘McConnell rule’ to argue against holding a SCOTUS hearing before the midterms is ultimately a politicaldead end. It was a shameless, partisan stunt when McConnell used it to block hearings on Garland; and it is little more than that now.
/A principled approach that will rally dems and independents across the political spectrum is to argue the obvious: Congressional hearings must not be held for any nominee put forward by a President under investigation by a special counsel for grave national security concerns.
/By focusing on the national security issues surrounding this president, the democrats argue from a principled position of strength. No CREDIBLE counter argument can be made against this principled approach. And it is a natural segue into an equally important issue:
/whether a president who is the ‘target’ of an on-going Federal investigation with major nat’l security implications should be permitted to influence a court that will ultimately decide issues integral to that investigation. Even the appearance of such impropriety
/Even the appearance of such impropriety would erode the integrity of the court. And given the inherent power of the court to shape political and social discourse for decades to come, this non-partisan argument should not, and must not, be ignored
/The talking points surrounding this position are myriad and powerful and will naturally resonate with the democratic party leadership and their base. Moreover, this principled approach raises the concerns and issues all voters should consider when casting their ballots in 2018.
