In 2014, a friend encouraged me to follow SK on Twitter and FB. I did, it was in middle of Mike Brown news. I set up auto donations to his “Justice, That’s All.” $50/mo. Got emails asking for more $$$, promising more action. I always gave.
In Sept after countless emails to his supporters promising that he was setting something “big” up on September 8 (or 9?), he disbanded JTA in one fell swoop. I was like https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🙁" title="Slightly frowning face" aria-label="Emoji: Slightly frowning face"> and confused, but forgot about it.
But in December, preparing for my taxes, I was going through my bank statements and realized that I was still on auto-pay for the JTA donations. Even after he disbanded the group. I wrote him an email.
I just wanted to know how he was using the funds that had been auto donated since July, since he’d disbanded the group. I was totally open to him using the funds for righteous action. But he never responded.
I had hoped he’d write back and say “hey I used it for Ferguson protestors - for food and water” or something. I just wanted to know my cash had been used for good purpose that I could feel good about. But he never replied.
So I wrote to some of the other ex-members and asked if they’d heard from him. They hadn’t, and they had also made donations that he hadn’t accounted for. I was sad. I had really been into King’s message and energy.
So I finally took a screenshot of the donations from my bank account, and asked @ShaunKing if he could explain to me how he spent my donations, and why he didn’t acknowledge the auto-pay payments that came to him after he disbanded the group.
He immediately blocked me.

And then for the next month, my mentions were filled up with people calling me racist, a bitch, etc. It was an incredibly difficult experience.
What was worse was that if I spoke up about Shaun King, racists used *my* comments as ammunition against actual protestors and the effective activists. I hated that my truth about Shaun King could be used like that. So I shut up.
And so every year after that, Shaun King would find a new generation of twitter users, manipulate them into hero worship, and take them to the cleaners too. Like clockwork.
And that’s my personal experience with that con man. He’s using people who mean well, and when they start to catch on, he blocks them and uses his worshipful followers to harrass them, sometimes off twitter completely. Fin.
P.S. a couple of years later, after one of the groups he swindled made a huge public stink, he eventually sent repayments. It was so odd. Like, he was just sitting on that money? https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🧐" title="Face with monocle" aria-label="Emoji: Face with monocle">

A reminder, I block MAGA, white nationalists, racists, trolls, and any other slime from RT’ing my comments about Shaun King.

I don’t support you and I don’t support him; we aren’t on the same side so don’t fucking try me.
As a white person, I’m not comfortable with speculating on what his racial makeup is. It’s not my call. It’s sad if he’s lying about it as part of his con, but, again, not my call. I’m far more upset by his manipulative conning and thievery.
