[Fake Love Dance Analysis]

Fake Love is a powerful song accompanied by powerful choreography. This is a deep dive analysis into what makes this such a beautiful and haunting piece, and how it highlights so many of Jimin’s strengths as a dancer.

Good choreography includes dynamic moves, interesting formations, clever transitions, changing levels and takes advantage of each dancer’s strengths & abilities. @BTS_twt
GREAT choreography also connects the dance to a theme or story that draws the audience in and captivates them from start to finish. Fake Love is great choreography. @BTS_twt
Fake Love starts where DNA left off, with them unraveling their perfect dream and desperately clawing to make sense of what’s happened to them and their identity in their pursuit of perfect bliss. @BTS_twt
This choreo style is a perfect fusion of all Jimin’s strengths - the techniques of street styles, the fluidity and flexibility of ballet and the emotional expression of modern. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
Even in the very first moves, Jimin is adding his unique twist with his knocked knees and stuttering hits on each count of the music. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
As they head into the chorus, Jimin is highlighted in the centre and delivers powerful tricep pops on each beat as the group portrays the painful denial they’re embracing in an effort to hold onto their fake love. 🙈🙉🙊 #JIMIN @BTS_twt
Normally pops are difficult to see on camera, so Jimin is likely popping his back and shoulders as well to exaggerate and intensify the movement. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
As he dimestops through the next see/hear/speak no evil movements, it looks like he adds a chest pop on the “hear no evil,” for emphasis before standing straight and rolling his shoulder. Then he flourishes with one arm, bends low and whips his head around to exaggerate the turn.
Hoseok’s verse is interesting because when he goes into his movements on count 4, the rest mimic him, but always a count behind, like a dragging shadow. It finally culminates in he and JK’s mirror move as he asks who he’s become. @BTS_twt
After his verse, Hoseok drains down to reveal #JIMIN behind him, controlling him by the hand. His haunting vocals singing “for you I could pretend like I was happy when I was sad” completes the chilling visual as his hand sways the group side to side, like puppets on strings.
Jimin walks forward with weight and emotion, his eyes, face and entire body portraying his pain as he sings “for you I could pretend like I was strong when I was hurt.” Each staggering step shows his determination to keep going despite near and utter exhaustion. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
Jimin delivers these heart stabbing moments with an intense amount of passion. His right arm reaches out and pulls on a fixed point in the air to pull himself forcefully to his knees, his head flinging back for emphasis. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
A sharp elbow hit, a tutting hand combo almost faster than the eye can see and a smooth hand wave underscore the build up to the prechorus. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
The choreo gets really interesting here, bringing the theme of the song to life. They throw their arms into static 90 degree toyman arms. You can see Jimin also isolating his wrists and his fingers dangling, giving the illusion that all his joints are suspended by puppet strings.
This moment illustrates how much they’re at the mercy of whoever holds the strings, the one for whom they’re erasing themselves to become a doll. The control relaxes for a second and the group falls, Jimin landing into a jazz split only to be pulled up by the strings 1s later.
As he staggers forward, Jimin adds tension to his movements and leads with his shoulders as he paints the image of a puppet trying to walk forward, fighting against the strings that control him. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
In the second chorus, Jimin adds an en dehors turn to his popping routine, spotting to the front. It brings focus to his unique blend of styles, popping and contemporary, and shows how beautifully they can be sewn together. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
Jimin excels at going from hard to soft, evidenced here by his sharp violent hits melting into tension filled movements that soak up every note of the music. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
Yoongi’s rap expresses the disbelief and frustration that changing themselves didn’t lead to the real love they were expecting in DNA. Going down the line, they’re forced to face each other and what they’ve become as they fight against this cold new reality. @BTS_twt
Jimin doesn’t hold back here. Starting from a crouched position with perfect turnout, he rises, singing about how he doesn’t know why it’s come to this. A master of emotions, he cradles his head and brokenly laments that he no longer knows himself. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
#JIMIN bounces sharply off the end of this first move, making it look like he’s coming up against a wall. Then he drops down and smoothly snakes up in an S shape, only to slow the movement at the top and let the tension roll down through his torso in a wave.

This moment is powerful. Jimin and Tae’s heavy footfalls accompanied by their layered vocals haunt the audience as the two lean on each other for support before having to ultimately tear themselves away and find their own path. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
Every movement on stage has purpose as a dancer. Jimin stumbles forward here, the emotional exhaustion displayed throughout his face and entire body of this battle that can never be won, this flower that can never be bloomed, this love that can never be real. #JIMIN @BTS_twt
With a final tantalizing body roll and sharp coordinated movements, #JIMIN joins the group in painting a desperate tableau as they reach for something they can never attain.

Truly a remarkable piece, musically and lyrically, and it is choreographed and danced to perfection. 💜
