howdy!
yes, i’m an engineering major but i also absolutely love reading!!

because books bring me so much joy i thought i’d start a thread of books, quotes, etc that i think might make the world a little brighter by simply being read
please let me know if you’ve read these books, what you think of them, or any recommendations you might have!! i’ll add to it when i read new books or remember others. i really hope you enjoy and that this might motivate some of you to pick up a book —
you won’t regret it.
think of this as an epigraph to a thread of books to escape to:

“A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading.” —William Styron
the book thief // markus zusak

set in nazi germany, this book has Death as the narrator and is so powerful and beautiful. Death is a very intrusive narrator and it leads to a super interesting style. Even just thinking about it makes me want to reread it.

fave quotes:
all the light we cannot see// anthony doerr

this is also set during ww2, but follows the lives of a blind french girl and an orphan german boy. heartbreaking, intricate. i went to bed crying at 3 am after i finished this book but it was definitely worth it.

fave quotes:
the little prince // antoine de saint-exupery

i’ve made so many friends read this book because it’s just so amazing. it reads like a children’s book but has so many important messages. this is one of those books that i reread super often because it’s such a gem.

fave quote:
the hitchhiker’s guide to the galaxy// douglas adams

read it. just read it, please. it’s a hilarious, insane sci fi book that will leave you wondering how the heck a person can make you laugh so much at a book.

fave quotes:
“Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place.”

The Alchemist// @paulocoelho
This is one of those little books that changes your life if you let it. It’s beautiful and inspiring. A lot about faith, a lot about life, and a lot about love. A beautiful read and definitely one of my favorites.

a little light for your day 💞
portrait in sepia// isabel allende

i read this one in spanish which was very fun. it’s unlike any other book i’ve read. the narrator tells the story of her ancestors, and it’s a wild one. it’s beautiful, raw, and honest. i definitely recommend it.
“...each affects the other and the other affects the next, and the world is full of stories, but the stories are all one”

Mitch Albom
Name of the Wind // Patrick Rothfuss

this book has the most beautiful storytelling i’ve ever read. it draws you in completely. this book makes you feel so deeply and i was in awe throughout. i can’t explain it but it made me fall in love with reading even more, 10/10
what lies behind us and what lies ahead of us are tiny matters compared to what lives within us - henry david thoreau
some words from c.s. lewis that might be helpful right about now
tuesdays with morrie// mitch albom

a little book about the important things in life. a collection of conversations with a dying man. a gentle reminder of what you’ll remember, of what is worth your time.
