I like how Gunbuster has a Mac in the classroom segment in episode 2.
as always, Gainax loves their mechanical stuff.
I was surprised to see that this was on a plane (even a spaceplane) and these people are standing so close to it. That seems like a bad idea.
It's an interesting design. 4 under-wing boosters each with 3 nozzles.
And it drops off the boosters at some point.
So it's a spaceplane with 2 stages and a solid rocket boosters. Neat.
nice exploding rockets in space.
Ahh yes, Soviet Giant Robots.
Cause of course in 2023, the Soviets are still around and launching giant robots into space.
Ahh, yes, Naturally you'd launch giant robots from an orbiting space station by just having them step off and fall towards earth.
I don't mean to turn this into "Foone complains about the bad science in 1980s giant robot anime" but man, that jetpack really looks like they designed it based on a jet engine.
yeah, this is a jet engine with variable-area nozzle.
you gotta love this kind of damage. so chunky.
Nothing says "2023" like IBM 9-track tape.
lovely rockets.
the fish-eye distortion on this is neat.
A computer screen. I like the big clunky dials on the side.
retro-rockets!
farewell, spaceship.
even back in the 80s, Gainax's love of complicated mechanical doors was visible if you knew where to look
JUMP TO SUBSPACE!
ENTERING THE SUBSPACE
gotta put the fighters together when you're switching to battle mode. I'm not sure why you wouldn't just leave them put together, but maybe it's like those planes with wings that fold up for storage on aircraft carriers.
Ahh, there's the Gainax Pointless Mechanical Animation we know and love.
You can't have a giant warship in deep space without VENDING MACHINES!
open the laser cannon doors!
nice. focusing mechanisms in the lasers.
AND FIRE!
Beautiful violet lasers.
Lasers are usually not this bendy, though.
KSPLODEDY
I like this little aircraft control lamp thing they use for launching the robots.
More of those turkey-feather engines.
this elevator DEFINITELY needs a weird 3-part door mechanism.
heh, they've got a closing shutter over the main bridge, for going to warp.
I like their "stock ticker" system to tell you that they're going to WARP WARP WARP WARP WARP
CONNECT THE GLOWING THINGS
THEY GONE TO PASTEL!
No! not the vending machines! you maniacs!
you blew it up! damn you to hell!
FIRE ALL LASERS!
AT... ANYTHING?
It's a little hard to tell because of the lightning (or "lightening" as the subtitles have called it at least once), but this is definitely a complex door.
coming out of warp
the missile launchers are inset, presumably for protection.
FIRING MISSILES
Missiles away
MORE MISSILES
These are, of course, "photon torpedoes". That's why they're so bright.
Gatling-gun lasers!
INFINITE PEW PEW
popular opinion: 80s anime had the best explosions. look how organic this shit looks
Another beautiful explosion.
this gif might not work. it's stuttering in the preview. Let's see.
yeah, that's weird.
another fun engine power up animation.
and look inside that nozzle: it's got blades. THIS IS STILL A JET ENGINE, GAINAX.
THOSE DON'T WORK IN SPACE.
You know when the pilot of a giant mech takes an unfinished prototype out in the middle of the battle and starts shouting their attack names, Shit Is About To Get Real.
Another fine explosion.
The only problem with having an incredibly powerful beam weapon is that it doesn't really help if you can't hit your enemy with it.
Good of the designers to make it so that when you naturally try to protect yourself by raising your arms, it activates the shields.
Be careful when impaling your enemy with the front of your ship. It can heavily damage them, sure, but at that range it's no longer possible for them to miss.
PUNCH PUNCH
it's no regular punch, though. it's a punch full of ELECTRICITY AND DEATH.
ahh, one of the most beautiful sights in nature, the giant space bug getting exploded by a giant robot piloted by a teenage japanese girl
This is a very Hideaki Anno shot. Showing a war-room in the fish-eye reflection on a clock.
Ultra-Bullet train! I don't know how that's different from a regular bullet train.
Other than it appears to be flying.
more rocket launches
they seriously love their engines powering up in this anime
mm, touch screens.
LAUNCH!
LASERS!
WINDSHIELD WIPERS ARE GO
some awesome spacecraft action in this episode.
more lovely explosions.
Retro-rockets again
more of those explosions. I like the gritty look of these shots, to represent how they're supposed to be in an area swarming with small aliens
another boom.
This interface has great physicality. you can feel how THUNK this is.
MECHANICAL GIF TIME AGAIN
MORE MECHNICALS!
MORE, MORE I SAY!
WE NEED MORE
MORE! AT SPEED!
EVEN MORE!
GRABBIES, READY?
ENGAGE OTHER GRABBIES
GRABBIES, GRABBED.
GIANT ROBOT IS CONNECTED
Armor: engaged.
And for the final touch: two little complex doors.
cockpit power up. all screens show magic pink, apparently.
combining robots have to show off for a second after they finish coming together. it's just required.
Getting some Ramiel (5th angel) vibes from this laser beam.
wasn't this a weapon in Scorched Earth?
Another thing to watch out for: if a giant robot fires a laser so hard that you have to see it firing 3 times from different angles, you are FUCKED.
I like how basically all sci-fi agrees on one thing: if you overload your FTL unit and let it break, some seriously bad shit is going to happen.
to avoid making an already-long thread any longer, I'm not gonna go onto episode 6 right now. Sorry if you wanted another 20 gifs in a thread that is getting dangerously close to 100 :)
