I swear, every time a storyboarder is like "ok this next scene is just some mechanical stuff to show that they're doing things", every animator starts breathing heavily.
animator: *cracks knuckles*
the intern only got to do this little door. but still, it's a lovely door.
SMASH THE FORCED SHUTDOWN, WE NEED MORE MECHANICAL ANIMATIONS
MORE DOORS CLOSING: CHECK
IT'S NOT ENOUGH! THE VIEWERS DEMAND MORE DOORS CLOSING
BIGGER DOORS! WE NEED BIGGER DOORS!
INSERT YOUR KEYS: PREPARE TO TURN TO ACTIVATE ADDITIONAL GIFS
TURN!
this computer core has a lot of tubes. it's very plumbing for a computer.

maybe it's a liquid cooled supercomputer?
on second thought, it better not be liquid-cooled if you can crawl around inside it while it's on.
where did they get a picture of my room
REMOVE THE UNIT
EXPOSE THE CORE
how you know your computer repair project has Gone Wrong:
you have to get out the angle grinder.

I typoed that originally as "angel grinder", which is different. it's also different to "angel grindr", which is an app Kaworu uses.
hacker voice: I'M IN
heh, opened up another episode, and they use the same glass-smash animation, just colored different and with "FUSE CUT" instead of "FORCE SHUTDOWN"
mmm, 90s computers. I love 'em
that box in the upper left is definitely 3.5" floppies.
RELEASE THE GIANT SCREWS!
OPEN THE ELEVATOR AND EXTEND THE RAILS
car interiors in anime are also often just beautiful.
MORE OF THEIR FAVORITE THING: CLOSING DOORS
This elevator indicator only appears for like a second or less but look at it. it's got like, two numbers? 8-28? and it's elevator #55?
and that weird ticking thing? huh.
EVA unit 01, opening up.
Another one of those "really short mechanical shots" that do so much to make the episode AWESOME.
and close back up
TIME TO OPEN A BIG FANCY DOOR
how do we launch an EVA unit? simple: THROUGH A BUNCH OF DOORS
"So in this scene, Gendo walks in through the door, and Shinji is surprised, as-"
"WAIT! he walks in through a door? can we have it be an elevator instead?"
"uhh... sure?"
"YES! sweet automatic doors, how I love you..."
"And if you're good, I'll let you also animate a close-up of the doors closing."
So later they show off this neat system where entire buildings in Tokyo-3 can be lowered under the ground, to protect them from Angel attack, right?

So what's the most important part of that system?
THAT'S RIGHT, ANIMATING THE DOORS THAT COVER UP THE BUILDINGS
I like how they drew Ritsuko's computer. It's clearly supposed to be a monochrome screen, like maybe one of those plasma displays?
That maybe made sense in 1995 when this was made, but it's set in 2015!
I like the little bits that lock in place when the buildings go back up
Another close-unscrew-lights sequence. that car probably parked way too close, and they'll get a ticket
Another fancy door, this time containing A GIANT ROBOT
and what do giant robots need? GIANT GUNS! behind doors, of course.
The robot also has a fancy opening compartment containing a knife.
