Madālasā was a great Brahmavadhini mentioned in the Puranas. She was married to king Kuvalayāsva (Ṛtadhvaja). The couple had 3 sons & the king gave them kshatriya names 'Vikrānta', 'Subāhu', and 'Śatrumardana'. Queen Madālasā laughed each time the king gave names to their sons.
After naming the 3rd son, the king was annoyed by the laugh of Madālasā. He asked her the reason for the laughter and if she did not like the names given by him then she should name the fourth son after he is born. Madālasā accepted & named the 4th son 'Alarka’ meaning 'mad dog'
On hearing this, the King asked the reason for such inappropriate name. The wise Madālasā explains nature of self (Brahma-Gyan):
Madālasā sings a spiritual lullabies, describing the nature of self (Brahma-Gyan) to her infant sons while rocking them to sleep. @gabriellaburnel beautifully sings this song which is originally from the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa:
After Alarka grows up to be a intelligent young man and ready to be the king, his mother Madālasā explains the duties of a good king to him:
She also explains to him the duties of four varnas (not based on birth) in society and the four stages of a persons life:
The wise Madālasā further expalins her son Alarka about the sacredness of the Cow:
Alarka goes on to become a great king and his parents Madālasā and Kuvalayāsva retreat to the forest.
Thus was the wisdom and knowledege of great women in ancient times. These stories of our past need to be told and retold to instill pride in modern Indians.
