I've decided to make a thread detailing @MariahCarey's deepest and most personal songs. She has so many great songs, but a lot of her deepest songs tend to be tossed to the wayside unless you're a big fan due to them not being big singles like her 18 #1 Hits. Hope you enjoy.
#1 Looking In- Daydream (1995)
Looking In was a reflection of her life at a time where things were definitely tumultuous behind the scenes (due to her controlling marriage with Tommy Mottola). It's hauntingly beautiful and Mariah has stated she wrote it in 15 minutes.

#2 Outside- Butterfly (1997)
Outside is a song about never feeling like you belong, which I think everyone feels at one point in their life unfortunately. Mariah has said that being bi-racial has led to some unfortunate experiences and this song reflects the ambiguity she's felt.

#3 Can't Take That Away- Rainbow (1999)
A year after her divorce, Mariah released the album Rainbow. She's said the label really fought her on this record & she wanted this song to get more air play, but the label gave her a hard time. It's a beautiful empowerment song though!

#4 Petals- Rainbow (1999)
Petals is a lyrical masterpiece in which Mariah self reflects on troubled relationships she dealt with in the past. The beginning of the song has always been calming to me because of the subtle rain and thunder.

#5 There For Me (2001)
There For Me was the B-side of the Hero/Never Too Far charity single that was released in 2001 to bring a message of hope to the U.S after the 9/11 attacks. I remember reading that this song was an ode to her fans for always being there for her.

#6 Through The Rain- Charmbracelet (2002)
Through The Rain was the lead single off Mariah's album Charmbracelet. After suffering a breakdown in 2001, this song was a return to form for her. It's a beautiful ballad with a wonderful message of hope, strength, and perseverance.

#7 My Saving Grace- Charmbracelet (2002)
My Saving Grace is a gospel track off of Charmbracelet that has Mariah thanking God for delivering her from all the hard times she's experienced. As a Christian myself, I love this song deeply, & am thankful to MiMi for creating this song.

#8 Sunflowers for Alfred Roy- Charmbracelet (2002)
This song was dedicated to her father who had recently passed away before Charmbracelet was finished. Throughout the song, Mariah talks about her relationship with her father and its ebbs and flows.

#9 Side Effects- E=MC^2 (2008)
Side Effects was a song in which Mariah reflects on the emotional scars that her first marriage left on her life. It is saddening that Mariah still unfortunately deals with the side effects of her first marriage as she truly doesn't deserve to.

#10 Bye Bye- E=MC^2 (2008)
Bye Bye is a song MC dedicated to people who lost a loved one. Mariah talks about her relationship with father throughout a portion of the song. I remember listening to it a lot when my grandma passed away a while back. It really is a beautiful song.

#11 I Wish You Well- E=MC^2 (2008)
In this song Mariah reflects on some of her troubled past relationships. I loved her usage of Bible verses in this song, it was very clever. I like that it's just her and a piano. Those type of songs make her voice shine effervescently.

#12 The Art of Letting Go- Me...I Am Mariah (2014)
In this song, Mariah talks about someone in particular wronging her and her having a tough time letting go what they did to her. I've always wondered if this song is about anyone specifically, but I'm still unsure.

#13 Faded- Me...I Am Mariah (2014)
On Faded, Mariah talks about how in a relationship sometimes people aren't there for you when you need them to be. I always thought this track was about Nick because I know he worked a lot and would always be out doing stuff. Beautiful vocals!

#14 Close My Eyes- Butterfly (1997)
Close My Eyes was a track Mariah wrote over a four year time period. It is a reflection of her childhood up until the Butterfly era and all the tough times she's been able to make it through (i.e. her first marriage and troubled childhood).

#15 Hero- Music Box (1993)
Hero is a song that has helped many people through depressive situations with its powerful message. Mariah has even said how sometimes she goes back to it to remind herself of her own inner strength. It truly is a beautiful song with empowering lyrics.

That concludes this thread! Mariah is an amazing singer, song-writer, musician, and all around person. Truly one of the best to ever come in to the music biz! Remember often imitated, never duplicated.
