The Dan Marino collegiate thread begins here.
His arm strength as a freshman is as good as we've ever seen from anyone.
Marino was definitely far from the statue in the pocket he became due to leg hits. Such a pure release and natural accuracy.
The camera gets stuck on Marino but wait for the replay of the route. That placement on the deep sideline throw is perfect.
lol at the scoreboard after an offensive penalty. sports in 79 had to be cool
Destroying zones as a freshman on third downs
On to the second game that I have from 1979, Pitt vs Penn State
Even Marino had growing pains with interceptions
Okay, fast-forwarding to 1980 against Florida State, this was Marino's first throw of the game lol
@DanMarino with the punt. I'd say it's a good thing he stuck with throwing the ball and not kicking it (he had some good airtime though)
Jeebus
He had unique touch for such a cannon, but his decision-making also revolved around his arm early in his career. A drop, followed by a forced ball that was an INT. Of course, most of these are 2-man routes.
Effortless and pinpoint.
They went for 2 early in the third ( #analyticz) and he dropped this dime
I feel bad for the receiver for taking this hit but look at the passing window that Marino hits.
Jumping ahead to 1981 now. His junior season was his best statistical year.
WHEW that's how a bang 8 is executed
Another dime
Marino was doing this against #9 Penn State lol
This was ruled an interception (defender was probably out) but even the bad plays look pretty.
His next throw after the interception was quite the impressive blend of touch and velocity
Latter part of the game got out of control for Pitt. A few bad interceptions and forced throws like this as they were down big anyways.
1981 against Florida State, Marino drops another bomb.
His athleticism on rollouts was such an underrated and under-utilized part of his collegiate game.
His control of his velocity is unrivaled
Another passing window clinic
One thing I'll say is Marino threw numerous bad interceptions.
Their '81 Sugar Bowl intro is excellent
Maybe my favorite thing about making this thread is seeing how quickly the ball arrives after a receiver puts their hand up.
One spot to put this ball and he nailed it
Cross body throw is no problem
MY GOD. 4th and 5, 42 seconds left, down 3 in the Sugar Bowl...
We're on to 1982 when Marino threw more picks than touchdowns, but the highlights were still there.
50 yards into the breadbasket with ease. He suffered from a ton of drops at Pitt, though.
Pitt beat North Carolina 7-6 in the '82 season opener despite Marino throwing 4 interceptions. Just didn't have a lot to work with.
'82 against #14 West Virginia
The definition of throwing with all-arm. His drop back is so cocky too lol
Sticks it
His velocity on intermediate passes was second to none
