There was a good thread a while ago that argued that this is more or less what happened to the US greens and why US environmental politics has almost completely bypassed them.
Without getting to deep into this, a central problem here is that the US has a *very* electoral conception of movement democracy, and this creates a lot of opportunities both for internal shenanigans within party orgs and for the system itself to waste everyones time.
