OMG!! Today’s debate was ENLIGHTENING!! Dr Ushy and her enablers opened my eyes on why there are very few women in leadership positions. Dr Ushy was kind enough to offer simple solutions (to men, women, and ABCDs) to fix it! Thank you, organizers for opening my eyes! https://twitter.com/DrKapley/status/1341719271974400000
Here is what I learnt (you should learn too) from Dr Ushy’s talk.
Point 1: Bias is in your brain. If you want to be a leader, overcome your mental bias, and suck it up!! Simple! It is not the “system” - IT IS YOU!!! (1/n)
Point 1: Bias is in your brain. If you want to be a leader, overcome your mental bias, and suck it up!! Simple! It is not the “system” - IT IS YOU!!! (1/n)
http://4.Be imperfect - because if you are try to be perfect, you might become too ambitious and dominating! Who wants an ambitious leader - not me - I’m really happy with the mediocre ones we have!! (4/n)
Ponint 5: Open your mouth!!! (Repercussions, retaliations - don’t worry - they also probably only exist in your brain) (5/n)
So, see! I told you it was easy!! Once you follow these steps — overcome mental bias, move confidently, stop being aggressive and start being imperfect - leadership positions will knock on your door loudly!!! (6/n)
What a cost-effective solution — no need of transparency in how “leaders” r appointed, no need 2 make workplace safer for women, no need 2 adopt sensible policies-paternity leave, having child care facilities, sensitising d work force, paying salaries on time etc – nothing! (7/n)
Truly enlightening - really helped me understand what we are up against!! We are not up against the system, you silly - we are only up against ourselves, because we are the ones holding ourselves back!! (8/n)
If only all the senior women scientists in India knew about this — they would have easily become leaders/directors of CSIRs, IISERs, IIT’s!!!! (9/n)
Also, one last note - to those in positions of power, who are choosing to stay away from this “ugliness”, I will leave this here. The ones who keep perpetuating bias count on your silence (10/n).
In conclusion, tax payer’s money put to such good use!! The future is bright for URMs! Bye
