I am a cosponsor of legislation to provide monthly $2,000 checks to families for the duration of this crisis, and I strongly support increasing the payments by unanimous consent this week! I am glad that Speaker Pelosi is acting quickly. Remember the facts (thread)
First: Senate Republicans blocked additional aid, and have fought for less emergency spending for months. Democrats have proposed more spending, in both direct checks, unemployment, and other critical programs, for months.
Second: President Trump has been totally disengaged for months while Sec Mnuchin negotiated for him. If he wanted more relief spending, he could have pressured McConnell to act.
Third: by waiting until after the bipartisan bill has passed to become involved, the president is recklessly risking huge disruptions to critical programs. If the bill that congress overwhelmingly passed doesn’t become law, UI and eviction moratoriums expire. People will be hurt.
Forth: Either the president doesn’t understand the bill he complains about, or he is being dishonest. Emergency measures were combined with a routine government funding bill. Foreign aid programs are routine, and necessary—they don’t reduce our Covid response.
These funding bills prevent a government shutdown which would cripple our economy and our public health infrastructure in the middle of a serious crisis.
This week, we can swiftly boost payments to individuals, which my democratic colleagues overwhelmingly support. If Republicans are serious about supporting the president, they should join us!
