After the announcement of #MonsterHunterRise (which I will likely never play) I am, unsurprisingly, wondering how to emulate monster hunting in the @CortexRPG #TTRPG.

The monsters are easy — it's the character Traits that are giving me problems.
Boss monsters are just Crisis Pools with SFX.

But PCs? There no social aspect to the MoHu game, just hunting, which limits my choice of Traits.

Distinctions are a given, Affiliations (Solo, Pair, Team) work well here, and Weapons and Armor are Power sets.

That's 3 so far.
So I need at least one more Trait for a Cortex Prime MoHu #TTRPG game.

Attributes don't work — everything's physical.

Roles like Tank, Support, DPS, Range might work — but that's largely dictated by a player's choice of weapon.
I suppose I could do something like Approaches — Power, Finesse, and Speed — different ways of hunting monsters and interacting with your weapon.

Ooh. Maybe have those all start at d8, and get stepped up or down based on the Weapon and Armor set chosen.
Yeah. I like that idea.

So, for example, the Hammer would step up Power but step down Finesse.

The Heavy Bowgun would step up Power but step down Speed.

The Approaches would also be affected by Armor, allowing players to further customize their hunter.
Wait. Not Power, Finesse, and Speed.

The Approaches should be Might, Precision, and Speed.

That sounds better, as some weapons — like Longswords, Lances, and Bowguns — encourage a more exact fighting style.

Precise conveys that idea better.
Aww yeah! I think I just came up with an idea of how to emulate harvesting resources — a big part of Monster Hunter — in this Cortex Prime #TTRPG game.

Dice. Of course.

Roll against the Doom Pool and bank your Effect Die. Larger dice are rarer, more valuable resources.
I'm thinking there'll three kinds of general Resource Dice — Animal, Plant, and Mineral — plus a special type for every Boss Monster.

To craft an item, the player spends a number of specific saved Resource Dice, plus a Boss Monster Resource Die if they want special effects.
So, like, if the player wanted to craft a Rathalos Flame Sword d8, they'd have to spend:
- d8 Animal Resource Die;
- d8 Mineral Resource Die; and
- d8 Rathalos Resource Die.

That'd give them a d8 weapon with some sort of flame-based SFX (since the Rathalos breathes fire).
