I have numerous relatives who believe God has "raised him up" - no joke. The more evidence of his loathsome character, the more they dig in, pointing to the Bible's flawed characters.

They are single-issue voters, for the most part.
It's all about abortion. As a liberal, even though they love me...they view me as belonging to the party of baby-killers, and so they pray for me, and all liberals.

I think "prosperity gospel" played a part in this culture, too.
The idea that if you do God's will, he'll bless you financially.
...and if you're not blessed financially, you must not be doing God's will. Think about that for a second.

Think about how, if you buy into "prosperity gospel" you then must view poor people as, at best, ignorant...and at worst...evil. Against God.
Why, they must be, otherwise God would bless them with riches.
