[Thread] How does a country "end" the sales of petrol and diesel cars?
Here is a summary of how the UK
decision to do this by the end of this decade.
Let's review what it means.

Here is a summary of how the UK
decision to do this by the end of this decade.Let's review what it means.
1/ This decision is part of a 10-point plan for green industrialisation
2/ It follows a *public consultation* with stakeholders, industry and the wider public. Here is the link to the consultation https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/consulting-on-ending-the-sale-of-new-petrol-diesel-and-hybrid-cars-and-vans
3/ The public was asked about:
- phase out date
-definition of what should be phased out
-barriers to achieving the above proposals
-impact of these ambitions on industry and society
-measures required to achieve the earlier phase out date

-impact of these ambitions on industry and society
-measures required to achieve the earlier phase out date
4/ There will be 2 steps to the end sales of petrol and diesel cars:
Step 1 : phase-out date for the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans brought forward to 2030 (it was 2040)
Step 2 : all new cars and vans be fully zero emission at the tailpipe from 2035.

Step 2 : all new cars and vans be fully zero emission at the tailpipe from 2035.
5/ A "grace period" for 5 years for hybrids:
Between 2030 and 2035, new cars and vans can be sold if they have the capability to drive a significant distance with zero emissions. This means "plug-in hybrids or full hybrids", and this will be defined through consultation.

[Let me add a comment here: there is no such thing as a "self-charging hybrid". Don't let marketing confuse you!]
Let's continue.
Let's continue.
6/ How much will the government invest?
ÂŁ1.8 billion were announced: they will support greater uptake of electric vehicles. New measures include more charging points and innovation for new clean technologies.
ÂŁ1.8 billion were announced: they will support greater uptake of electric vehicles. New measures include more charging points and innovation for new clean technologies.
7/ Part of that announcement includes ÂŁ1.3 billion to accelerate the roll-out of charge points for electric vehicles in homes, streets across the UK and on motorways across England.
8/ The government is providing grants for homeowners, businesses and local authorities to install charge points, and is also supporting the deployment of rapid charge points
9/ The UK government today has also pledged ÂŁ582 million in grants for those buying zero or ultra-low emission vehicles to make them cheaper to buy and incentivise more people to make the transition.
10/ Green number
plates will be introduced from Dec 2020 to increase awareness and helps bring in local perks. E.g. cheaper parking, cost-free entry into zero-emission zones https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/introduction-of-green-number-plates-for-ultra-low-emission-vehicles Fun fact: Costa Rica got green plates in 2019, Norway has special plates too

11/ The Department for Transport will publish a green paper on the post-EU regulatory regime for CO2 emissions from new road vehicles. This will consider how to best deliver the transition to 100% zero emission sales for cars and vans.
12/ A consultation on the phase-out of new diesel heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) will also be launched.
Question: California is the world leader with a rule to accelerate the purchases of zero emission trucks!

The Department of Transportation estimates that bringing forward the phase-out date 10 years could create 40,000 extra jobs by 2030 and will see emissions reductions equivalent to taking more than 4 million cars off the road. #RaceToZero

14/ The government is also committing ÂŁ500 million of funding over 4 years through the Automotive Transformation Fund to put the UK at the forefront of the design and manufacturing of zero emission vehicles. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/49-million-uplift-drives-automotive-industry-towards-green-future This will help build sustainable supply chains
15/ And a link to @COP26: For the first time, ministers from the world’s largest car markets will come together on 27 Nov 2020 to form the **Zero Emission Vehicle Transition Council**. Hosted by the @AlokSharma_RDG they will meet again in 2021, including at COP26.
Still there?
