On the matter of experience with provision of PPE I really do have a problem.

End March when we went on hard lockdown- the world was experiencing a severe shortage in PPE. We were literally scrambling for whatever is available.

A colleague in Italy sent software for some of the stuff that could be 3D printed.

We shared it widely and those with ability printed it and sold it. This was for visors- face shields.

One of the biggest suppliers of PPE was only able to supply limited stocks of N95’s.
They were hard to come by.

As a clinician- by the way buying from my own purse- I did not care the colour cat- I just wanted PPE to be able to still do some work safely.

It was a scramble and you were all witness to it.
I think it’s a little dishonest today to be saying- no we want experience.

The experienced ones were not able to supply and some entrepreneurs saw a gap.

WITS/Charlotte Maxeke designed a Perspex box- we were excited. But today we say there were pre-existing suppliers.
The only gripe I have is with WHO got the tenders to exploit this gap.

It would have been great had it been some youngsters at UJ/TUT/UCT or innovator at home.

But those with proximity to financing large stocks- got the deal. That is what I have a problem with.
And by the way most of these things- PPE does not need a rocket scientist to design.

A friend asked me for ideas- they work for CSIR- I told him I don’t understand why such institutions aren’t able to score this easy bit of incomes.🤷🏽‍♀️
