Chicago's City Council is holding a hearing on school police at 10 a.m. this morning. We'll hear from @ChicagoOIG Joe Ferguson, whose scathing report two years ago pointed out lots of problems with cops in CPS. Here's where you can watch it live: https://www.chicityclerk.com/city-council-news-central
Ahead of time, the City Council's Progressive Caucus is holding a press conference right now to call for yanking cops from schools. Watch that here: https://www.facebook.com/ChicagoProgressiveCaucus/videos/2645404849072243
Ald. Rod Sawyer starts things off: "These are children, they should be talked to. ... School is where we bring our children and they come out as young adults. ... I don't think the best experience is having police officers dispense discipline in our schools."
Ald. @CDRosa: "We need police-free schools and we need a real public safety strategy ... that's trauma-informed."
Ald. @RossanaFor33: This isn't just about getting out the threat of punishment that's always hanging over our students' heads, it's about re-imagining school safety so students aren't cast away because of one mistake
Interesting news: Ald. @RoderickTSawyer says he thinks the proposed ordinance to remove cops from schools, which is now buried in the Rules Committee, will get a hearing in City Council
Speaking about CPS putting the decision on school police in the hands of each invidivual school, @aldsophiaking says "the choices that are before us are false choices." King says schools are having to choose between an officer or no one else, so of course they'll choose the cop
