In my ENTIRE education I was required to read ONE book by a black author and you best know it was about slavery. Now you know how I went to university (where they teach grown ups) and I studied Creative Writing

In workshops I was constantly told I had to confirm what ethnicity my characters were (even if there were obvious cultural hints or if race was NOTHING to do with the chapter or story as a whole) and that characters seemed white or black that weren’t ...

These same students are now saying black voices matter and whilst I hope it’s not performative and it is just emotional awareness and growth it has been very confusing to see

One of my favourite tutors once told me how proud she was of me because I had kicked open doors despite the fact that the university couldn’t provide me with any of the opportunities that it could provide my peers... yet,

Some white students talked about my opportunities as if I only achieved them because I had the priviledge of having the diversity card

Ive seen a lot of people complaining about the free black uni movement and calling it racist or segregation - if unis employed BAME staff and were a safe space for black students to learn and express themselves ... there would be no need

University is an elitist experience drenched in white supremacy with a focus on the white middle class - I got lucky, so many BIPOC students had such traumatic experiences that they had to drop out.
