1/ Hard to believe that it is a year today since I had the privilege of taking over as 1SL. It has been an amazing year. Our Fleet has grown by nearly 120,000 tonnes. Recruiting is up by 20%. And #RoyalNavyTransformation has delivered some amazing things.
2/ In the North Atlantic, we are working with @RoyalAirForce to bring the game-changing P-8 Poseidon into service. We have responded to the highest level of Russian activity for 30 years, and @hms_kent exercised with the US in the Barents Sea.
3/ @HMSPWLS was commissioned. @HMSQNLZ deployed to the US, and has embarked UK jets, flown by @royalnavy pilots. We are now one of only 3 nations able to operate 2 carriers at sea at the same time.
4/ Our @RoyalMarines took part in the largest amphibious exercise in decades, #BalticProtector. They are transforming into a #FutureCommandoForce, equipped with the latest technology, able to deliver swiftly from humanitarian aid to lethal strike.
5/ Our Forward Presence is increasing around the world. @HMSMontrose and others protected 164 ships, accounting for 10m tonnes of UK shipping in the Gulf. @HMS_Forth was the first Batch 2 OPV to deploy to the Falklands, and @HMS_Medway is in the Caribbean.
6/ All our Tide Class RFAs are now in service. @RFAMountsBay delivered lifesaving aid to the Caribbean after Hurricane Dorian, @RFACardiganBay has been supporting our Gulf force and @RFATideforce refuelled @HMSQNLZ on her maiden deployment to the US.
7/ And our @RNReserve continues to grow, more closely integrated than ever with our regular forces at sea and ashore. Over 900 stepped forward to respond in support of the government’s COVID-19 response, here and around the world. @CdreMelRobinson
8/ Most importantly, we are focusing on people. Increasing double crewing to improve work-life balance. Reducing gaps at sea. Reducing numbers of admirals and senior officers. And we are rated as the UK’s top apprenticeship provider.
9/ All this while still deployed from the Arctic to the Antarctic, delivering the nuclear deterrent, countering piracy and drug smuggling in the Gulf & Caribbean and helping the government respond to COVID-19. From the seabed to space, a Global Navy for Global Britain.
