Since it’s trending in light of certain recent political comments, I feel compelled to address the general uptick in #fatphobia on my TL. Even before Pelosi’s comments on 45, many of you have been talking about your #Quarantine diets or bemoaning your #SocialDistancing bods.
Here’s the thing: I know many of you are obsessing about your weight, or your diet, or your exercise regimen bc it feels like one thing you can control in a time of extreme uncertainty when we are being forced to acknowledge JUST how little is actually within our control.
How do I know this? Bc as an ED survivor, I know intimately how enticing it is to focus on the 1 thing you feel you CAN control. I’ve been there. It felt at the time like something good. I was taking control of my life & my body. And OH the positive reinforcement I received!
That positive reinforcement is probably why so many of you still think that fat directly correlates w/health. And that desire for a sense of control is a big part of why our society sees fatness as a personal failure on the part of fat ppl.
Here’s the thing, though: not only is being fat NOT a personal failure and not only is it NOT something we all can control, it’s not even a great measure of health! Yes, healthy food is healthy. And yes, moving our bodies is healthy. But fatness =/= unhealthy!
Fatness DOES = lack of access to adequate medical treatment, though. How many negative outcomes have to do with lack of care?! A skinny person w/high cholesterol gets meds. A fat person w/the same is told to lose weight & restrict diet. Gee I wonder why outcomes are different.
So ... I’m seeing a lot of ppl talk about how we can criticize the president w/o criticizing his weight. Yes. 100%. He is a horrible human, leader of a death cult. His weight is irrelevant. But also ... take a min to think about how you talk about your OWN weight #onhere.
What are you telling your fat friends & followers when you talk negatively about your body, or celebrate your weight loss, or bemoan your diet? What are you telling your friends & followers who are eating disorder survivors?!
I want to end this thread with some #FatPositivity. I’ll go first. I’m currently over 225lbs, and I have never been prouder of my body! It is housing gestating twins and still managing to propel me around my home. Thank the gods for my strong, thick legs!!
