Diasporic Filipino experiences are valid but when they take the nostalgia narrative to establish identity but conveniently disregard the real Filipino problems while enjoying Stateside privilege is a disservice. Tuwang tuwa kayo sa balut at taho pero bobo kayo sa Pinoy history.
Kaya sobrang urat ako dun sa mga nag-iidentify sa second gen sa US na Filipino sila pero never bumisita sa Pilipinas at nagsusuot ng traditional indigenous wear without actually learning the history and the oppression indigenous people undergo here
Lalo na sa mga advocate ng #Filipinx na hindi naman talaga inaral ang actual Filipino language at epekto ng macho feudal colonialism sa Pilipinas. Di tayo Latinized country, sobrang iba ng experience natin sa kanila which led to us evolving inclusivity and language differently
Basically point ko is maghahanap kayo ng identity pero kapag inaaway kayo for having out of context and privileged positions on Filipino identity, iiyak kayo na ineexclude kayo. Malamang lumaki kayo sa ibang bansa, iba talaga experiences natin. Mas amerikano kayo kesa pilipino.
Lagi talagang magkakaroon ng exclusion at away sa inyo unless you actually recognize your privilege and the actual Filipino context hindi tung romantic pursuit at cherrypicking mo ng pagkapilipino.
And please, you can’t claim to be an authority on actual filipino homeland culture until you’ve actually immersed and experienced it. Viewing it thru a privileged Western lense is just tonedeaf and insensitive.
